South 10th Street Park
Marshfield Key Club is adopting the South 10th Street Park. The public is invited to the 1st Earth Day Community Work Party from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 22. This little park is located north from Marshfield High School on the corner of South 10th and Johnson Street. The work party is hosted by Marshfield Key Club and through SOLV. Parking is limited, but volunteers can park on Johnson Street or follow signs to the lower entrance of the park. Please bring your favorite garden tools. Some tools will be available. Also, bottled water and snacks will be provided. Here is a little background information on how Marshfield Key Club got started with adopting this park. Two Marshfield Key Club students started initiating the idea of adopting the South 10th Street Park in October 2016. After several visits to the park, taking pictures, researching its history and creating a “wish list” of the park, it was time to approach the Coos Bay City Park’s manager, Randy Dixon. He listened to their proposal and was so impressed with their enthusiasm that two weeks later, the two students gave the same presentation at the Coos Bay Parks Commission Meeting in front of nine board members. Then the next step was to develop an architectural plot plan of the park and what the new proposed design would look like. In January of 2017, their plot plan was approved. The first phase of the new design for this park was to schedule some community work days to remove the invasive plants on the hillside and open the park up to let light in. To help fund improvements, maintenance and purchase new equipment for the park, Marshfield Key Clubbers will be organizing fundraisers, community clean-up days, writing grants and asking for donations and sponsors. Key Club also hopes to give the park a new name. Activities include: Invasive Plant Removal, picking up litter.
